EarthKam Winter Misson
ISS EarthKam: WinterMission ISS_13_01
Who: *Pleiades,in conjunction with Maria Catalina of the Astronaut Teacher Alliance, invites you to participate in an online EarthKAM training webinar. With EarthKAM, YOU tell the ISS where you want the ISS to capture high resolution images of Earth. ISS EarthKAM, intended for middle school students, is designed to engage and excite all ages of educators and students alike.
What: ISS EarthKAM (Earth Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students)is a NASA program that invites students, educators, and mentors around the world to explore Earth from the unique perspective of space. The role of educator / mentors will be to engage in participatory Knowledge Capture regarding the use of a digital camera aboard the International Space Station (ISS) and take high resolution images of any place on Earth along the orbits propagated by the ISS. A new camera with a wider angle 50mm lens images approximately 200km (124mi) across by 134km (83mi) can be enlarged by more than 400 percent with features remaining identifiable.
When: ISS EarthKAM Mission ISS_13_01 will take place January 29 - February 1. Then each educator and mentor will create a Space Port Academy to empower students through Knowledge Capture as they uplink their photo requests to the ISS Astronauts.
Where: Online. You are invited to a training session on Saturday, January 25 (see below for registration). Each trainee will receive codes (one code per image) for participating students.
Why: The Astronaut Teacher Alliance works to facilitate cross-curricular engagement on a STEM platform. The searchable image collection and learning activities on the ISS EarthKAM website are extraordinary resources for engaging students and addressing standards in language arts, geography, social studies, math, communications, fine art, and Earth and space sciences.
How: Saturday January 26, 2012 Training. Bosnia - 10:00 PST (20:00 or 8pm)

Closing Activities: Students will write a letter to the ISS Crew after participating in the mission. Educators or Mentors will provide images of the students at work. The best photos are from behind the student with the EarthKAM visible on computer screen. No images of students faces.

Emir Tanovic and Ervin Adrovic, team leaders and co-chairmen of the society are teaching Astronomy to the young in 50 schools in this region and preparing to open the first modern observatory in the region. ASP will provide Astronautics workshops and publish an Astronomy book for young people later this year.
*EarthKam is a program for middle school students and teachers.
How did ISS EarthKAM start?
Dr. Sally Ride, America’s first woman in space, started the program, originally called KidSat, in 1995. The KidSat camera flew on several Space Shuttle missions. Since 2001, the ISS EarthKAM camera has been on the International Space Station.
Who runs ISS EarthKAM?
ISS EarthKAM is a NASA mission administered by Sally Ride Science, the company Sally Ride founded to inspire girls and boys to pursue careers in science and engineering. The ISS EarthKAM Mission Control Center is on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. Undergraduates at UCSD support all ISS EarthKAM missions.
*Astronaut Teacher Alliance (ATA) A global network of middle school educators providing participatory education. ATA takes to task a focus on enabling educators to create Space Port Academy’s where participants engage on virtual journeys. Globally, we are raising a Space generation through an expeditionary learning model.
